Becoming Medicare Eligible
Retirees/spouses/dependents are required to enroll in Medicare Parts A and B, immediately upon becoming Medicare eligible due to age and/or disability. You will be automatically enrolled in the customized Highmark Blue Shield Freedom Blue PPO Medicare Advantage Plan. Approximately two to three months prior to the month in which you turn 65, the Central Benefits Office will send you an email, if one is on file, or a letter including the following information:
- Freedom Blue PPO Medicare Advantage coverage start date;
- Your new monthly premium (if applicable);
- Your new group number
Once received from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), please send us a copy of your Medicare ID card confirming your enrollment in both Medicare Parts A and B.
What if I become Medicare eligible, but my spouse is not Medicare eligible (or, if my spouse is Medicare eligible before I am Medicare eligible)?
Only the person becoming Medicare eligible will be moved to the Freedom Blue PPO Medicare Advantage Plan. Anyone under 65 will remain in their pre-Medicare retiree coverage until they become Medicare eligible.
Do I need to enroll in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan?
No. With your Freedom Blue PPO enrollment you will automatically be enrolled into a Medicare Part D prescription plan.
Can I combine my Freedom Blue PPO Medicare Advantage enrollment with another Medicare Advantage plan or a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan?
No. You cannot enroll in the Freedom Blue PPO Medicare Advantage plan and have any other Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D prescription drug plan coverage.
