Commencement programs scheduled at PASSHE universities

Harrisburg – The 2009-10 academic year is winding down, and, as it does, plans for commencement programs are being finalized at all 14 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) universities. Below is a listing of each university’s commencement plans, including scheduled speakers.

Bloomsburg – Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski will address graduates from the College of Education and College of Liberal Arts at 9:30 a.m., May 8. State Senator John R. Gordner will be the speaker later in the day for the 2:30 p.m. program for students in the College of Business and College of Science and Technology. Both ceremonies will be held outdoors on the Academic Quad. In the event of rain, the ceremonies will be moved indoors to Nelson Field House.

California – Fred Gladney, a 1971 alumnus and a successful corporate executive in the information technology sector, will address undergraduates at 10 a.m., May 8, in Adamson Stadium. After working with IBM and Compaq Computer, now part of Hewlett-Packard, Gladney was part of the leadership team of Isearch.com and senior vice president of Pittsburgh-based Development Dimensions International. He is currently a business and executive coach. Award-winning comedian Craig Shoemaker will receive an honorary doctorate. A former Cal U student, Shoemaker is a writer, stand-up comedian and comic actor who has appeared in more than 100 television shows and feature films. He was named Comedian of the Year at the American Comedy Awards on ABC-TV.

Robert E. Eberly Jr., who began a second career as an author and Civil War historian after retiring from the General Counsel’s Office of the U.S. Navy, will address master’s degree candidates at 7 p.m., May 7, in Hamer Hall auditorium. A re-enactor and living historian with the 101st Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers, Eberly is the founder and first president of the Low Country Civil War Roundtable and helped to start the popular Civil War Roundtable that meets regularly at Cal U.

Cheyney – Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter will provide the commencement address. The ceremony will be held beginning at 11 a.m., May 8, on the historic quadrangle.

Clarion – Dr. Arthur Steffee, retired surgeon and Clarion County leader in community and economic development, will offer remarks during separate morning and afternoon ceremonies to be held May 8 in Waldo Tippin Gymnasium. Students from the College of Education and Human Services and the College of Business Administration will receive their degrees at 10 a.m., while students from the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Nursing and Allied Health and the Division of Student Affairs will receive their degrees during a 2 p.m. ceremony. Dr. Steffee will receive an honorary Doctor of Public Service award at the morning ceremony.

State Senator Mary Jo White will address students receiving associate degrees from the Venango Campus at 7:30 p.m., May 8, in Robert W. Rhoades Center gymnasium.

East Stroudsburg – Dr. Robert M. D’Allesandri, president and dean of The Commonwealth Medical College, will address undergraduates at separate ceremonies scheduled for 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., May 8, in Koehler Fieldhouse. Students in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education will receive their degrees during the morning ceremony, while those in the College of Business and Management and the College of Health Sciences, will be presented with their degrees during the afternoon event.

ESU alumnus Dr. Charles T. Taylor, founder and executive vice president of PROTEUS Technologies, will be the speaker during ceremonies for students receiving their graduate degrees at 7 p.m., May 7, also in Koehler Fieldhouse.

Edinboro – University President Jeremy D. Brown will be among those addressing graduates during the ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m., May 8, in McComb Fieldhouse. Others scheduled to speak include students Stephanie Winters and Joshua Bow, both of whom are graduating Summa Cum Laude. Bow, a student trustee, will be representing the Council of Trustees. Patrick J. Santelli, a 1962 Edinboro graduate, will speak briefly after receiving an honorary doctorate for business leadership and for his support of the university. David Irlbacher, a member of the Edinboro University Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, also will speak at the event.

Indiana – Glenn Cannon, a 1971 graduate and former director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and Jessica Sabol, a theater and English major in the Robert E. Cooks Honors College, will speak at the main ceremony scheduled for 11 a.m., May 9, at Miller Stadium. Cannon, who currently serves as a senior vice president with Hilliard and Heintze, a security, safety, and emergency management firm, also will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree. He is a recipient of both IUP's Distinguished Alumni Award and Presidential Legacy Award for Civic Services.

Kutztown – Accounting professor Norman Sigmond will address graduates in the Colleges of Education and Business at 9 a.m., May 8, while English professor Curt Herr will speak at the ceremony for students in the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Visual and Performing Arts at 2 p.m. the same day. Both ceremonies will be held in Keystone Field House. Also scheduled to speak at the morning ceremony are students Ryan Gruber, who will receive his master’s degree in education, and Frank W. Donchez Jr., who will receive his bachelor’s degree in accounting. Student speakers for the afternoon ceremony will be Kyle Fox, who will receive a master’s degree in computer science, and Ashley Wutke, who will receive a bachelor’s degree in theater.

Lock Haven – Stephen A. Glassman, chair of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission and vice president of the Governor’s Cabinet on Disability Rights, will speak at separate ceremonies scheduled for 7:30 p.m., May 7, and 10 a.m., May 8, in Thomas Field House. Students from the College of Education and Human Services will receive their degrees Friday evening and those from the College of Arts and Sciences, Saturday morning.

MansfieldStuart Weiss, president and owner of Studio City and a 1980 Mansfield alumnus, will address graduates at 11 a.m., May 8, at Karl Van Norman Field. Weiss, who previously worked for NBC, among others, formed Studio City in 1995. It is the largest media marketing agency in the country. Last August, Studio City won the first national Emmy Award for on air promotion. Weiss received the Outstanding Young Alumni award from the MU Alumni Association in 1991. In the event of inclement weather, commencement will take place in Decker Gymnasium.

MillersvilleBrian Gladden, senior vice president and chief financial officer, for Dell, Inc., headquartered in Austin, Texas, will be the speaker for the undergraduate ceremony to be held at 10 a.m., May 8, in Biemesderfer Stadium.

Dr. Tiffany Wright will address students receiving graduate degrees and/or post-graduate bachelor’s teacher certification at 6:30 p.m., May 7, in Pucillo Gymnasium.

Shippensburg –U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a Shippensburg alumna and the first woman to be elected a governor and a United States senator, will address undergraduates at 11 a.m., May 8, in Seth Grove Stadium.

Alumna Judy Happ, vice president for administration with the International Institute for Restorative Practices, a graduate school in Bethlehem, will speak at the ceremony for graduate degree recipients at 7 p.m., May 7, in the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center.

Slippery Rock – Two ceremonies will be held, May 8, in Morrow Field House for undergraduate and graduate students receiving degrees. Students in the College of Health, Environment and Science, the College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts and Graduate Studies will receive their degrees at 10:30 a.m. and those in the College of Business, Information and Social Sciences and the College of Education, at 2 p.m. There will be no speaker at either event.

West Chester – Retired Brigadier General George H. Walls, Jr., who earned a degree in education from West Chester in 1964, will address new graduates at 10 a.m., May 8, in Farrell Stadium. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1965, he served on active duty for more than 28 years before retiring in 1993. He last commanded the Second Force Service Support Group at Camp Lejeune, N.C. In case of severe weather, ceremonies will be held in Hollinger Field House.
