Maximizing the impact of simulation

Jason Zavala, political science major at East Stroudsburg UniversityWinter break is a great time to relax, reset, and prepare for the spring semester. It’s also a great time to gain hands-on experience abroad. I had the incredible opportunity to join eight other students at the 38th annual International European Union Simulation, held January 2-5 at the University of Antwerp in Belgium.

An EU simulation is a student-led experience in which we take on the roles of government leaders, industry representatives, environmentalists, and other key figures to replicate the European Union's decision-making process. In this simulation, I took on the role of Hungary's Prime Minister within the European Council.

This experience gave us valuable insight into international law, diplomacy, and negotiation processes. We refined our public speaking skills and deepened our understanding of cross-cultural communication.

This was my second time attending an EU simulation. Earlier in 2024, I participated in one in New York. After that fantastic experience, I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to do it again, especially since I could travel to another country this time.

Jason Zavala with eight student colleagues attending the 38th annual International European Union Simulation in Antwerp, Belgium.Dr. Johan Eliasson, a political science professor at East Stroudsburg University, has been preparing us for the trip since the start of the fall semester. He has taught us about legislative issues, how to write proposals, and how to develop effective study strategies.

EU simulations greatly impacted my journey at ESU. I embraced every opportunity with confidence, maximizing my educational experience. As a second-time participant in Belgium, I observed other students as they discovered their voices, became more assertive, and gained confidence in their abilities through empowering simulation exercises. These simulations teach valuable skills such as deal-making, communication, bargaining, and negotiation, which benefit any major or career.

I highly recommend this experience to all students. EU Simulations help develop valuable skills and offer a unique opportunity for social and educational experiences abroad. Students can explore new places and interact with diverse individuals in ways often impossible in a traditional classroom setting.

I may not know where I will be in five or ten years, but every step I take at ESU brings me closer to a career that I hope will positively impact the lives of others.
